Photograph features Camille Mariet, a photographer from Los Angeles suburbia whose work focuses on themes of gender, sex, power, and violence. Referencing midcentury advertising, pornography, and exploitation cinema, Mariet constructs fictive scenes of sexual abandon and murderous violence with lurid detail and explosive color. The work evokes neurological and psychological phenomena such as synesthesia and the uncanny valley hypothesis to encourage a type of engagement with them that begins in the cognitive realm and works its way out to the social.

The scenes are at once grotesque and glamorous; cold and alienating, yet inviting and tactile. Her current works center around the idea of femme violence as being a subversion of traditional femme gender prescriptions. They work to both challenge this idea and the one that violence–particularly physical violence–is a purely masculine domain.

Camille Mariet has been featured in Broadly & Polyester Zine and exhibited with Molly Soda & Arvida Bystrom.
