Ronald Wimberly subverts the conventional classic and pop narrative by telling it in the voice of outsiders. He illustrated Sentences: The Life of MF GRIMM, one of Time Magazine’s Top 10 Graphic Novels of 2007, during his nearly ten-year run with DC Comics. His 2012 graphic novel Prince of Cats samples the supporting cast of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet into a mythical violent, metropolitan youth culture to explore literary restraint in sequential art. He samples and appropriates to re-contextualize familiar notions of blackness.
